Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) gives a perfect and powerful answer to the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

A few days ago IMA strongly opposes against Pharmacy Council of India(PCI) to stop the movement to use the "Dr" prefix before Pharm.D course holders.

IMA also applied to Govt. of India, to use the authority and settle the issue as per the law. IMA also demanded to PCI to take back the order. They used the word as "unlawful order".

IPA gives a super powerful answer to IMA.

According to IPA, Pharmacy is an independent scientific profession. Pharmacy education and profession are controlled by PCI. PCI is a statutory body governed by Pharmacy act, 1948 passed by Parliament of India. They also clarified that this is unethical if any nonstatutory body discourages a statutory body.

IPA also give some points to clarify the usefulness and power of pharmacists.
  • 99.9% of disease is treated with medicines. Doctors can't treat a single patient, without medicines. And the medicines are made by pharmacists.
  • Pharm. D is a professional doctorate in Pharmacy. And the degree course is approved by PCI, All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE), University Grants Commission(UGC).
  • Pharm. D pass out students never projecting themselves as Medical Doctors but as a clinical pharmacist or as a drug expert, they can use the prefix of "Dr". As like other developed countries.
  • According to Medical Ethical Regulation, 2002, "A physician should recognize and promote the practice of different paramedical services such as pharmacy and nursing as professions and should seek their cooperation whenever required".
IPA also asked some questions to IMA.
  • Every doctorate degree holder prefix "Dr" with their name then why there any objection with Doctor of Pharmacy(Pharm.D)?
  • Nursing and Ayush doctors have already occupied the Medical Doctors position in the name of the clinical health officer. Why IMA is silent in that matter?
IPA mentioned that they respect the duty of IMA but they don't have the authority to discourage other professionals in the health care field.
