Some misconceptions about pharmacists with detailed clarification:

1. Pharmacists are not doctors or they are not like a doctor, the pharmacist is a different profession.

Pharmacist courses are named as Diploma in pharmaceutical technology (D.Pharm), Bachelor in pharmaceutical technology (B.Pharm), Master in pharmaceutical technology(M.Pharm), Doctor in Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), etc.

Pharmacists are pharmaceutical technologists, who create, modify, innovate the technologies of the medicine and drugs to remove and cure the disease as fast as it is possible.

Pharmacists are also working to reduce the side effects of medicines and increase the efficiency of the drug molecules.

2. Pharmacists are not only M.R.(Medical Representatives).

Some people think that pharmacists mean medical representatives. But pharmacists are not only Medical Representatives. There is a lot of job opportunities for pharmacists without a medical representative.

A suited-booted man with a big backpack. Going to every doctor's door to promote the selling of medicines. That's the concept of M.R. to a simple person. But that's not true for every one M.R. A B.Pharm completed medical representative can teach the doctors, that how the medicine working on the patient.

But most of the medicine company not recruiting pharmacy degree holders as M.R. They want to reduce the cost of marketing and that's why they recruit simply science and sometimes arts graduates as medical representatives. Science and arts graduates don't have the proper skill and knowledge about medicines. That's why the total environment of M.R. is polluted by unskilled persons.

A pharmacy graduate Medical Representative have the professional skill and knowledge of medicine. So they have the capability to cooperate with the doctor to promote sales.

The power and usefulness of pharmacists:

3. Pharmacists have more knowledge in pharmacology than a doctor.

Pharmacology is a subject that contains the action of the drug and the reaction of the body due to the drug. In medical science, this is one of the most useful subjects to treat a patient. Pharmacists have more knowledge on that subject than a doctor.

In rural areas Govt. hospitals, due to the lack of doctors pharmacists play the role of a doctor. In Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, etc. countries, a pharmacist can treat a patient as a medical practitioner.

4. Pharmacists can produce and sell medicines but others can't.

Patients take medicines according to the doctors but most of the patients don't know the real mechanism through which the medicine working on them. There is a huge technology behind a medicine, that nobody knows without the pharmacists.

From the clinical research to the final product for the market. There is a lot of hard work behind the whole process. Pharmaceutical companies funding and managing the process but without the pharmacist, no medicines can be produced, no testing can be done. No medicine can be sold and no medicine can be marketed.

Some people thinking that there are a lot of medical stores but they are not a pharmacist. But ask them about drug licenses then you can understand the power of a pharmacist. Without a pharmacist, no one can get a drug license.

Without a pharmacist, no one can produce or manufacture medicines.

Hope you understand the power of a pharmacist.

5. A pharmacist can reduce the cost of prescribed medicines.

Most of the doctors write the brand name of the medicines on the prescription. Sometimes they write the brand name of the medicine with the high retail price but the same composition medicines are present in the market at a lower price.

Usually, Indian patients are not aware of the composition of the medicine. They only trust the prescription written by the doctors. Some dishonest doctors taking advantage of this unawareness of the patients and making a lot of money by writing and promote the selling of some brands.

A pharmacist can reduce the cost of prescribing medicines by alternating the brand name of the same composition of the medicines. Pharmacists can help a patient to save their money.

Example: Look at the picture given below.

Both tablets contain paracetamol 500 mg. Both are branded company products. Cipmol-500 is the product of Cipla and Calpol is the product of GSK. But you can look at the retail price of both medicines. The rate of Cipmol-500 is more than Calpol-500.

Here, I just give a simple example. There are thousands of medicines and their alternative medicines.

generic medicine, branded medicine, paracetamol, different price of same drug
